Russian airports ban liquids in carry-on luggage ahead of Winter Olympics

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, released the new rules Jan. 8, although they recommended passengers carry all liquids in their check-in baggage, but did not ban them in hand luggage.
Two Moscow airports, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo, banned liquids after Rosaviatsia’s recommendations, but later Krasnoyarsk’s Yemelyanovo Airport also joined them. After the Ministry of Transport announced the new
ruling, other airports followed suit. Passengers were not told in advance and found out about the new restrictions when they arrived at the airports.
Exceptions are possible for medicine and baby food, but airport security services have permission to check them. Also, passengers will have to prove they really need the medicine during the flight.
The ban is in response to continuing terrorist threats and is supposed to last until the end of Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Last year, the European airports community expected the liquids rules to be partially relaxed, permitting passengers to buy duty-free items over 100 ml outside Europe and transfer through a European airport without having the item confiscated.
