Kampala to buy into Air Uganda

Air UGANDA (U7, Entebbe/Kampala) owner, the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), could dispose of some or all of its stake in the airline to the Ugandan government, Uganda's New Vision newspaper has reported. The announcement was made following a meeting in Paris between Ugandan strongman Yoweri Museveni and the Aga Khan, whose foundation, the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, controls Celestair alliance carriers also including Air Mali (I5, Bamako) and Air Burkina (2J, Ouagadougou). No further details of the planned transaction were revealed though a divestment would not come as a surprise given AKFED's recent disposal of its 15% stake in Air Côte d'Ivoire (HF, Abidjan) to local Ivorian investment group, Golden Road. For its part, Kampala had previously toyed with plans to resurrect defunct national carrier, Uganda Airlines (QU, Entebbe/Kampala), with reports claiming it would operate not only on domestic and regional sectors, but on international ones as well.
